Insta360 will turn your videos into 3D scenes: here's how

Insta360 will soon let you create 3D scenes out of your videos, a feature that could reshape how we produce immersive content. The news, first reported by Android Authority, suggests the company wants to bring volumetric capture from the lab to any creator's pocket.

From 360 cameras to virtual spaces

Insta360 has spent years democratizing panoramic capture with cameras like the X3 and ONE RS. Its software already allowed reframing 360 video and applying effects, but generating usable 3D meshes required external tools and a lot of time. The next logical step was to bake that conversion directly into its ecosystem.

What the feature will actually do

According to the leak, the Insta360 app will take a video and reconstruct a navigable 3D scene, likely using AI-assisted photogrammetry. No date or price is confirmed, but it's expected to hit recent models first and then expand. The key point: you won't need a LiDAR scanner or a studio—just shoot and let the software do the rest.

Who wins and who loses

The big winners are VR, AR, and game content creators, who will now be able to prototype environments without relying on 3D artists. The losers are traditional 3D scanning services, which will see a consumer app eat into their market. My take: it's a smart move by Insta360 to keep users inside its app, but reconstruction quality will decide whether it's a toy or a pro tool.

Toward a more accessible metaverse

If the feature works well, it could accelerate spatial content creation for platforms like Vision Pro or Quest. It will also force competitors like GoPro and DJI to rethink their software. In the short term, expect a closed beta and plenty of YouTube tutorials.

Ultimately, the question is whether Insta360 can maintain enough quality for these 3D scenes to be more than a gimmick.
