A leak has revealed how the iPhone will interact with LG's upcoming smart home accessories co-developed by Apple, including proximity controls and setup without power. This matters because it signals a deeper integration between iPhone and the smart home, potentially making Apple's ecosystem even more seamless and exclusive.

Context

Bloomberg reported earlier this week that LG is launching a line of smart home accessories: a thermostat, temperature sensor, deadbolt lock, wired video doorbell, and security cameras. Apple apparently co-developed these products, and now leaker "pdfu" has detailed how the iPhone will recognize and control them.

Details

When you bring your iPhone near an accessory, the Dynamic Island will show an "Open Controls" option, according to the leak. For cameras and doorbells, it will instead display a camera viewer. On iPhones without a Dynamic Island or on iPads, a 30-second notification will appear. Users can disable proximity controls in the Home app after setting up the accessory.

The Proximity Control feature uses an identifier stored on an NFC tag and a Bluetooth Low Energy broadcast to recognize the device. Tapping the accessory for the first time will also show Dynamic Island feedback as setup begins. Additionally, a HomeKit-exclusive feature will allow setup without power: the iPhone transfers its pairing identity and network credentials into the accessory's secure element via NFC. Once powered on, the accessory connects to Wi-Fi or Thread, and the home hub completes Matter setup. LG's firmware replaces the NXP Matter NFC applet with a HomeKit applet in the NXP SE051H secure element.

Analysis

This move reinforces Apple's strategy of deeply integrating the iPhone with the home, but it also creates a more closed ecosystem: NFC setup without power will be HomeKit-exclusive, though standard Matter pairing remains available once powered on. For users, the experience will be smoother; for competitors, it's another challenge in relying on open standards.

Implications

Apple is expected to showcase these LG accessories at its "Welcome home" event on October 13, alongside a new home hub, updated Apple TV 4K, and refreshed HomePod mini. Proximity Control is still in development and could change before shipping. If it solidifies, it sets a precedent for future third-party devices seeking integration with Apple's ecosystem.

The real question is whether Apple will allow other manufacturers to offer this integration or if it will remain an LG exclusive.
