Tesla Semi's 500-Mile Range Hits a Wall: Charging Infrastructure

Tesla Semi's 500-Mile Range Hits a Wall: Charging Infrastructure

Tesla's Semi promises 500 miles of range, but it arrives as the charging infrastructure for electric trucks remains woefully inadequate. The charging infrastructure is the real bottleneck for electrifying heavy transport.

Context: years of promises and delays

Tesla unveiled the Semi in 2017, promising a revolution in freight transport. Since then, delays have been constant, and although production finally began in 2022, mass deliveries are still pending. Meanwhile, the charging network for heavy-duty vehicles hasn't kept pace.

Details: range vs. reality

The Tesla Semi offers up to 500 miles of range, according to company figures. However, recharging those batteries requires fast-charging stations with outputs above 1 megawatt, something that barely exists in a few locations in the US and Europe. Tesla's Megacharger network is still nascent, and other operators like Electrify America or Ionity have no clear plans for trucks. Moreover, most current stations aren't designed for the size or charging times of an articulated vehicle.

Analysis: who wins and who loses

Tesla has the technology, but without a dense charging network, fleet operators can't rely on the Semi for long-haul routes. Short-term winners are diesel truck manufacturers and logistics operators who will keep using fossil fuels. Tesla needs to invest massively in infrastructure or partner with governments and energy companies to make the Semi viable beyond urban niches.

Implications: the future of heavy transport

Electrifying heavy transport depends not only on better batteries but on a dedicated charging network. Without it, the Tesla Semi will remain a symbol of what could have been. Other manufacturers like Nikola, Volvo, or Daimler face the same wall. The solution lies in public policies that incentivize megawatt charging stations and connector standardization.

The Tesla Semi is a great truck, but without adequate charging infrastructure, it will remain a dream for most fleets.
